Chapter 5: Working Memory Flashcards
What is the Atkinson-Shiffrin Model?
(AKA Modal Model)
memory conssits of three stores: a sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM).
What does it mean for STM to be Modality-Independent?
It doesn’t matter what type of memory it is
Smell, Touch, Sense, Taste, Hearing etc.
What is required to avoid STM decay in Modal Model?
Rehearsal
Ex: Repeating a phone number over and over
What is Long Term Memory in the Modal Model?
- Stores and processes all information in one place
- Long-lasting, unlimited capacity
- Can be retrieved to STM for information processing
What is short term memory in the Modal Model?
- Modality-independent
- The capacity is about 7 items (Miller’s rule)
- Rehearsal is required to avoid decay
What are some Criticism of the Modal Model?
- There should be more STM stores for differet modalities
- if STM memory retrives data from LTM why do people with STM loss still have the ability to function
What is the Working Memory ModeL?
describes short-term memory as a system with multiple components. It comprises the central executive, which controls attention and coordinates the phonological loop (handling auditory information), and the visuospatial sketchpad (processing visual and spatial information).
What is the difference between STM and Working Memory (WM)
STM: Short term Storage of Information
WM: Short Term Storage AND manipulation of information
What are the three parts of STM in the Working Memory Model?
Phonological Loop
Visuospatial Sketchpad
Episodic Buffer
What Information is the Phonological Loop responsible for?
Verbal Information
- speech
- sign/lip reading
- music and sound
What Information is the Visuospatial Sketchpad responsible for?
Visuospatial Information
- Visual
Color and Shape
- Spatial
-Haptic
Kinesthetic
Tactile
What Information is the Episodic Buffer responsible for?
Integrates information from PL, VSSP, LTM
PL VSSP and Episodic Buffer are all types of STM but all together they are…?
WORKING MEMORY
