Conventional Level
A
Behaviour is still based on external factors.
- Obedience of rules or laws
- Laws and rules determine good and bad.
- Less self-centred.
- Recognise sense of duty and respect.
- Empathy and affection.
- Behaving because it will please or help others and earn their approval.

Preconventional Level
A
What is right and wrong is decided by consequence of action.
- External authorities
- Self-centred.
- Own interests are most important.
- “I will be good because I admire the person who will be impressed or because I fear or respect them.”

Postconventional Level
A
Doing good things because of care for others.
- Matured to a level of knowing the importance of good deeds.
- Self-disciplined.
- Social contract of sacrificing some freedom for others.

Why is Post-conventional the only truly moral way?
A
As they do things for other people rather than for themselves, life is also valued in term of its impact on the community’s welfare. They also think more of society as a whole and they need to conform in order to avoid self-condemnation
