Why does Exclusivism happen in Religion?
As people interpret writings and scriptures fundamentally
Problems with Muslim Exclusivism
Most ordinary Muslims believe that fundamental Muslims are not being true to the original teachings of the Qu’ran and Muhammed (it is a distortion of the real world faith)
Problems with Christian exclusivism
Jesus was found to accept people who were different e.g Samaritans and Roman, and opposed the exclusivist views of other leaders e.g Pharisees
non-religious exclusivism disbelief
There is no conflict with religion and science but the opposite as many scientists are religious e.g Francis Collins (Genome project+Christian)
Importance of views of others (non-religious)
Alastair McGrath “respect people who have studied other views and then express their opinion, this dialogue of different views creates a society that is tolerant and respectful”
Why do some people reject exclusivism?
- Illogical
- No way to prove one religion right
- If there was a clear ‘true’ religion we would all agree on it
- The “I’m right, you’re wrong!” approach is very harsh and unwelcoming
