Fundamental principles
Truths that serve as the foundation for all belief, behaviour or chain of reasoning
View of C.S Lewis on the moral existence of God
Conscious of God is within us, explains moral law which exists in all societies. Certain things are morally right and wrong, as if morality is subjunctive (opinion) no one could be critical of anyone else as it would just be a different point of view
View of Durkheim on the moral existence of God
Product of the way we are raised by our parents and society we live in. He was a socialist and a relativist. Rejected God as myth (children’s) as parents could threaten their kids with God. Heaven and hell used by society to stop people doing certain things. Conscious are the memories of every punishment we have had.
View of Macquarrie on the moral existence of God
Believes conscious is shaped by what parents and society approve. Called conventional conscious, when we go against we feel guilty. Also inherent conscious which is the essence of who we are in our being. Can also be known as authentic often reveals those who go against the society which they have been raised
Why could you agree with the moral argument?
Yes
- Not possible that all societies would evolve in the same way
- every time you say that something was unfair or wrong you are confirming that there are objective truths (proves morality isn’t subjective)
- Only God would have the power to make everybody believe the same things
-
Why would people disagree with the moral argument?
- Some exceptions (e.g some people believe killing is right)
- This is the way we were raised by parents and society
- There is nothing really wrong with stealing or lying but society works better wen we do not do these things so we are frightened into complying
- Different societies DID evolve differently and society only agreed on objective truths
Subjective
Depending on peoples opinion
Objective
Agreed on by all people (universal)
