What are the planning principles that guide HDB’s decisions?
Consideration of residents’ need and lifestyle aspiration.
Good connectivity to ensure accessibility for all residents
HDB also go by scale using the 3 scale approach
Town, neighbourhood and precinct
Town— Bedok
Neighbourhood—-Avenue
Precinct— street blocks
So within each town there should be an intersperse of low rise development e.g. schools and high rise residential development
Community facilities should be evenly distributed to ensure better accessibility
Unique identity carved out for each town to ensure sense of belonging among residents.
What is Integrated land-use planning?
It is a process where there is inputs and outputs.
Inputs— are from government agencies and different stakeholders’ views and so they need to discuss
Output- is to meet the needs of the residents.
Through a process of discussing which amenities to build in order to maximise space and meet the needs of residents such as using community centres
What are some potential challenges to integrated land-use planning?
It is difficult to get different stake holders to compromise amidst the conflicting demands and it is also difficult to fulfil the different needs, given the constraints of limited space, resources e.g. money
What do you understand by the idea of “sustainably managed”?
- Social (inclusivity) + economic and environment sustainability long term ways to improve social and economic prospects
- Minimum negative impact on the environment (environmental sustainability)
- optimise use of resources in order to minimise wastage and allow the resources to last for a longer period of time to cater to the needs of the future generation while meeting the needs of the present generation.
An over focus on one dimension may lead to others being overlooked.
Why sustainable housing?
Conserve resources and have enough resources for the future generations and to ensure quality housing. (Energy Efficiency:
Lower utility bills: Energy-efficient designs reduce energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills for residents.
Improved comfort: Efficient heating and cooling systems provide more comfortable living environments.—environmental building features)
Also because housing impacts the physical and human environment and there is also high rates of urbanisation and rising global population which have led to the rise in numbers of people living in undesirable conditions. Sustainable management of the growth and development housing can ensure quality housing.
Who should be involved in the sustainable development of housing and the city at large?
