Q

Understanding of Housing ideas: Housing development and associated activities are:

A

Housing development promotes high-density living and increase the resource demands made of surrounding areas.
|
People living in these areas need electricity, food, water for sanitation, space to dispose their waste and open spaces for recreation —> impact on natural environment

To meet their needs- extraction of natural resources

Q

What are the activities associated with housing development for deforestation?

A

Deforestation- make space for the building of houses, wood for construction, materials, furnitures)- need raw materials, underground mining— mineral are all underground

Q

What is the long-term impacts of deforestation?

A

Extinction of plant and animal species. In turn affect the food chain, disrupt the entire ecosystem in the long run when food chains are broken. When forests are cut down, carbon storage capacity lost, stored carbon is also released back into the atmosphere as CO2, a greenhouse gas, when trees are burned or decompose. This release adds to the atmospheric concentrations of CO2–global warming.

Q

What is the short-term impact of sand mining?

A

Loss of habitats of flora and fauna. E.g. mangroves
The removal of sand from riverbeds and coastal areas can destroy aquatic habitats directly by removing or altering where many aquatic organisms live, feed, and spawn.

Sand mining operations, especially those that are not properly managed, can introduce sediment and pollutants into water bodies. This increased turbidity can affect aquatic plants’ ability to photosynthesise and reduce water quality for wildlife.

Q

What is the long-term impact of sand mining?

A

This can lead to declines in fish populations and other aquatic life, affecting the biodiversity. It will also disrupt the ecosystem in the long run.

Q

What is the short-term impact of producing vast quantities of waste that are produce by human living in the cities?

A

Land (factories, offices, schools and homes), air and water pollution can have harmful effects on plants and animals as it will contaminate groundwater, surface water and lead to poor air quality. There may also be acute poisoning and death in plants and animals.

Q

What is the long term impact of producing vast quantities of waste by human living in cities?

A

Chronic exposure to pollutants can lead to developmental delays in both plants and animals, affecting growth rates, maturation and the timing of reproduction, and it may lead to the extinction of species in the long run and disrupt the ecosystem.

Q

What do you need to take note when writing a PEEL paragraph for e,g, to explain the impact of housing development on the natural environment.

A

P (State the point clearly, impact)
E Explain and elaborate be specific
E Use a SPECIFIC (where? Need to say the place, ) AND RELEVANT e.g. so the example needs to be significant and have a large impact (Singapore is not significant enough to talk about the impact)
L Finally link back to the question which in this case is the impact
