Chapter 5 - Stages of Motor Skills Flashcards
Locomotion
The act of moving from place to place.
Maturation
- A qualitative advance in biological makeup.
- Can refer to cell, organ, or system advancements in biological composition, and not just to size.
Creeping (quadruped crawling)
Moving on hands and knees.
Crawling (army crawling)
Moving on hands and stomach.
Arrested Development
The failure to develop beyond a particular point in development.
Longitudinal Research Study
When the same individual or group is observed performing the same task or behaviors on numerous occasions over a long time.
Walking
- A 50% phasing relationship between legs
- Has a period of double limb support followed by a
period of single limb support. - At least one limb is in contact with the ground at all
times.
Rate Limiter
An individual constraint of a system that holds back or slows the emergence of a motor skill, because it develops more slowly than other systems.
Running
- A 50% phasing relationship between the legs
- Has a period of flight, during which neither foot is
in contact with the ground.
Body Scaling
The process of adjusting the dimensions of an environmental object and its environment to accommodate the structural constraints of the performer
Jumping
Occurs when individuals propel themselves off the ground with one or both feet and then land on both feet.
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
The acceleration of a person or object is proportional to the force applied to it and inversly proportional to its mass.
Hopping
Occurs when individuals propel themselves with one foot and then land on the same foot.
Motor Milestone
A fundamental motor skill, the attainment of which is associated with the acquisition of later voluntary movement.
Leaping
Occurs when individuals propel themselves with one foot and then land on the other foot.
