Chapter 5: Short-Term and Working Memory Flashcards
The process involved in retaining, retrieving, and using information about stimuli, images, events, ideas, and skills after the original information is no longer present.
Memory
When is memory active?
Any time past experience has an effect on the way you think.
Which researchers are responsible for the modal model of memory?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
Name the structural features of the modal model of memory
Sensory memory, short-term memory, long-term memory
According to the MMM, what is sensory memory?
An initial stage that holds all incoming information for seconds or a fraction of a second
According to the MMM, what is short-term memory?
After sensory memory, holds 5-7 items for about 15-20 seconds
According to the MMM, what is long-term memory?
After STM, can hold a large amount of information for years or decades
MMM: Dynamic processes associated with the structural features that can be controlled by the person and may differ from one task to another
Control processes
Repeating a stimulus over and over
Rehearsal
Storing something in LTM
Encoding
Remembering info stored in LTM
Retrieval
Retention, for brief periods of time, of the effects of sensory stimulation
Sensory memory
The continued perception of a visual stimulus even after it’s no longer present
Persistence of vision
How does the persistence of vision help us see movies?
A person viewing a film doesn’t see the dark intervals between the frames
