Chapter 5 - Rocks Flashcards
How were sedimentary rocks formed?
Sedimentary rocks were formed when existing rocks, pants and animals were worn down and compressed to form new rocks. This happened mainly underwater.
How were igneous rocks formed?
Igneous rocks were formed when magma or lava cooled down. Magma cooled under the surface as lava cooled under the surface.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed by great heat and/or pressure.
What is granite?
An igneous rock. A course-grained rock with different colours (black, gray, white). Formed when magma cooled under the surface. Cooled slowly = large crystals. Used in buildings
What is limestone?
A sedimentary rock. Formed from the shells and bones of fish that are laid down in layers at the bottom of the sea. Pressure from these layers formed limestone. The remains are preserved as fossils. Used in cement
What is marble?
A metamorphic rock. Formed when limestone was changed by heat and pressure. Can have different colours depending on the nearby rock. Used in sculptures
