What are the types of aerial photographs?
- Vertical: Taken directly overhead. Divided into 9 boxes with 3 layers; top, centre, bottom e.g. Top Left, Bottom Right
- Oblique: Taken at an angle. Divided into 9 boxes with 3 layers; background, middle ground, foreground e.g. Left Background, Right Foreground.
Explain how you would compare maps using scale.
Maps: Drawn to scale; distances can be measured
Photos: Different scales in oblique photos - canβt work out distance; vertical photo has one scale
Explain how you would compare maps using realism.
Maps: Features represented by symbols
Photos: Features can be seen clearly e.g. Buildings
Explain how you would compare maps using clarity.
Maps: All features clearly seen everywhere; maps usually show larger areas them photos
Photos: Background far away in oblique photos - can see in foreground; usually show one section of a map
Explain how you would compare maps using details.
Maps: Maps show some details not seen in photos e.g. Place Names
Photos: Photos show details not seen on maps e.g. Land Use
