What are plates?
Plates are the broken up pieces of the crust!
How many layers are there in the earth?
There are four layers; the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core!
What happens when plates collide?
The oceanic plate sinks under the land plate because it is denser. Pressure builds and fold mountains and volcanos occur. when the pressure is released, earthquakes occur!
What happens when plates slide past each other?
Pressure builds up where the plates meet. After many years, this pressure is released and causes earthquakes!
What happens when plates separate?
When plates separate, magma enters the cracks and forms volcanos. Mid-ocean ridges are formed and new land is added. This is a constructive plate boundary!
What is the crust?
The crust is solid rock that covers the earth. It is divided into sections called plates.
What is the mantle?
The mantle is the layer under the crust. It is composed of molten magma that is very hot. The magma flows in currents that cause plates to move.
What is the core?
The core is the centre of the earth. It is between 3,000-5,000 degrees. This is divided into the outer core and the inner core.
What causes the plates to move?
Convection currents of magma in the mantle causes the plates to move.
