Chapter 5 Population Flashcards
What is population dentsity
Refers to the numbers of individual per unit area
Distribution refers to how individual in a population are spaced out across the range of the population randomly, uniformed, clumped
What is geographic range
A. Random
B. Uniform
C. Clumped
What is population growth rate
A population growth rate determines whether the size of the population increases, decreases, or stays the same
What is age structure
The numbers of males and females of each age a population contains
What factors affect population growth
The factors that can affect population size are birthdate death rate and the rate of which individual enters or leave the population
Population can grow more if more individual are born than die in any period of time true or false
True
What is immigration
A population may grow if individual move into its range from elsewhere.
What is emigration
A population may decrease in size if individual moves out of the population
What happens during exponential growth
Under ideal condition with unlimited resources a population will grow exponentially; the larger the population it gets the faster it grows
What is logistical growth
Occurs when a population growth slows and then stops following a period of exponential growth
What is carrying capacity
Is the maximum number if indivual of a paticular species that a paticular environment can support
What is limiting factor
A factor that controls the grow of a population , such as competition, predation, parasitism, and diseases
What is density dependent limiting factor
The number of organisms per unit area reaches a certain level
What is competition
When population becomes CROWDED individuals compete for food water space and sunlight and other essentials
The effects of predators on prey and the effects of herbivores on plants are very important density dependent population control. True or false
True
What is density independent limiting factors
What limiting factors do not typically depend on population density
Affect all population. In similar ways regardless of population size and density,
Unusual weather such as hurricanes, droughts, or floods and natural disasters such as wild fires
How has human population size changed over time
The human population like population of other organisms tend to increase, the rate of that increase has changed dramatically over time.
What is demography
The scientific study of human population.
What is demographic transition
A dramatic change from high birth rates and death rates to low birth rates and death rates
What is dispersion
The spatial distribution of indivuial within the population
What is growth rate
The diffrence between birth and death rate
Factors that affect population growth
Death rate , birthdate , immigration and emigration
What are the phases of exponential growth
Phase 1. Exponential growth
Phase 2. Growth slows
Phase 3. Growth stops
Includes carrying capacity
