Chapter 2 The Chemistry Of Life Flashcards
Which elements make up living things
Four elements make up 96% of the human body
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen.
What are elements
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substance
What is atom
The smallest particle of an element that has the characteristic of the element
What contains in the atoms structer
Nucleus, Inside nucleus is protons and neutrons Outside nucleus is the electrons Protons + Neutrons / Electrons -
What are isotopes
Atoms of the same element that differ in the numbers of neutrons they contain
What is a chemical compound
Substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions
What are the main type of chemical bonds
Ionic bond and covalent bond
What is a ionic bond
Formed when one or more electron are transferred from one atom to another.
Gaining or losing electrons
What are ions
Positively and negatively charged atoms
What is a covalent bond
That the moving electron actually travel about the nuclei of both atoms forming covalent bond
When two atoms share electrons
What is a molecule
Smallest unit of most compounds
Hydrogen bond
The attraction between a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge and another atom with a partially negative charge
What is cohesion
Attraction between molecules of the same substance
What is adhesion
Attract between molecules of different substance
What is capillarity
The attraction between molecules that results on the ride of the surface of a liquid when in contact with a solid
What is heat capacity
Due to hydrogen bonding it takes a lot of heat to cause water ,molecules to move faster which raises it’s temperature
This allows large bodies of water to absorb a lot of heat with only small changes in temperature this protecting organism from drastic temp changed
What is mixture
A combination of substance in which indivuial substance retain their own properties
What is solution
A mixture in which one or more substance are distrubited evenly in other substances
What is solute
A substance dissolved in the solvent
