Chapter 5 Part 1 Flashcards
Sensation
The usage of sensory receptors to identify a stimulus in the environment.
Perception
Consciously recognizing and identifying which stimuli is present
Sensory Transduction
A process of an environmental stimuli converting to neural impulses that are sent to your brain to help recognize the stimuli
Bottom-up Processing
a type of perception where the process of sensory transduction occurs and sends neural impulses to complex regions of the brain to recognize the visual stimulus
Top-down processing
another type of perception which occurs alongside bottom-up processing where you activate background knowledge to identify the origin of your stimuli
Perceptual Set
how ready you are to interpret a stimuli in a certain way
Ambiguous Stimuli
a type of stimuli that can be interpreted in many ways
What is the significant of sensory and perception?
significant in identifying and interacting with the environment. Can help you figure out what is dangerous. If your sensory system is not functioning properly, Your chances of survival greatly diminish.
What is an example that demonstrates the significance of sensory and perception
By not feeling the heat of a fire, smelling the smoke, or seeing a fire
What does synesthesia mean?
It means joined perception.
Syn means join
Aesthesis means perception
What is the most common form of synesthesia?
grapheme-color synesthesia
People associate a color with a number or letter
Absolute Threshold
the minimum number of physical stimuli needed for the person to detect it and activate sensory transduction
Difference Threshold
the difference of threshold between two stimuli
Signal Detection Theory
When our sensory systems respond to repeated or repetitive stimuli by reducing the effect of the sensory receptors acting on the stimuli
When does olfactory adaption occur?
There’s a change in sensitivity of certain odor because it cannot be recognized due to prolong exposure to it
