What makes an infinitive?
verb stem + infinitive ending (ar/er/ir) = infinitive
Examples:
cant + ar = cantar
com + er = comer
viv + ir = vivir
When is a verb considered “regular”?
A verb is considered regular if there is no change in the stem when it is conjugated.
Examples: comer, cantar, vivir
When is the present tense used?
To express the English simple present (e.g., I sing)
AND
the English present progressive tense (e.g., I am singing)
Example: Ella canta una canción triste (she sings a sad song; she is singing a sad song)
How are questions formed?
By inverting the subject and the verb
OR
by rising intonation, without changing the word order
Examples:
¿Cantas tú los domingos? (do you sing on Sundays?)
¿Tú cantas los domingos? (you sing on Sundays?)
When can the present tense be used to express a future event?
If an adverbial expression of future time is included
Ella canta con usted mañana (she’ll sing with you tomorrow)
How is a sentence made negative?
Place “no” directly in front of the verb.
Yo canto en el baño (I sing in the bathroom)
No canto en el tren (I don’t sing in the train)
