Chapter 5 Outline Flashcards
What is Energy?
It is the capacity to perform work
What is Kinetic energy?
It is energy in motion
What is potential energy?
It is energy in storage (It cannot be created or destroyed)
What are the two kinds of calories?
Big C = # small c in food (Ex. 1 Calorie = 1,000 calories)
What is ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate energy is cell respiration/ mitochondria
Why is ATP important?
It is dubbed as the universal unit of energy for living organisms (Di and Tri)
What are enzymes and why are they important?
Enzymes are proteins and they are important for metabolism
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy required to activate the reaction
What is substrate selectivity?
It is to induce a perfect fit
What is passive transport?
They are molecules that contain heat energy to spread concentration
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the passive transport of water across a selectively permeable membrane
What is active transport?
Active transport is the process of moving molecules across a cellular membrane through the use of a power and pump act
What are endocytosis used for?
Endocytosis is the process of capturing a substance or particle from outside the cell by engulfing it with the cell membrane, and bringing it into the cell
What are exocytosis used for?
Exocytosis is the transport/fusion of secretory vesicles with the plasma membrane and the extracellular space
What are the characteristics of enzymes?
They are selective, they each fit to one specific substrate, reusable, inhibitors
