Chapter 4 Outline Flashcards
What are the building blocks of all life?
Cells and they must be tiny and contain a mass amount
What are cell membranes made of?
They are made of special lipids and they act as doors
What is selective permeability?
It depends on the size (small) and charge (neutral able to go through)
What is the role of the nucleus in the cell
They are the big boss in the factory making all the blueprints and directing everything
What is the role of the ribosomes in the cell?
They are the manufactures in the factory
How are rough ER and smooth ER different?
Rough ER’s have bumps on them
What is the role of the Golgi apparatus in the cell?
They refine everything they get and package it and sort through it
What is the role of the lysosomes in the cell?
They are the recyclers of the cell
What is the endomembrane system?
The endomembrane system connects different parts of the cell to one another (It’s basically Fedex)
How are cells powered? animal/plant cells?
They are powered through energy (chloroplasts for plants)
How do cells maintain their shape?
They have a network of fibers and support beams/braces
How do cells move?
They move through Cilia(back and forth motion) or Flagella(sperm like tail)
What are some functions of cell surfaces?
Most cells secrete materials that are outside of the plasma membrane
What does the endoplasmic reticulum hold?
They hold Rough ER and Smooth ER
