Chapter 5- Nutrition and Diabetes Flashcards
Insulin
a hormone secreted by the pancreas
- key to the receptor to let in glucose into cells and muscles and other vital organs
Glycogen
a hormone secreted by pancreas, acts in the opposite way to insulin
-causes liver to convert its stored glycogen into glucose which is secreted into the bloodstream snd transported to the cells for energy in response to low blood sugar
Diabetes Mellitus
(Type 1 Diabetes) affects how the body uses blood glucose and can cause drastic weight loss and eventually death (affects younger population)
-treatment: injection of insulin (permanent)
Type 2 Diabetes
body cells are less responsive(resistant) to insulin or body does not produce enough insulin
treatment: stopped and reversed
Gestational Diabetes
diabetes during pregnancy
Diabetes can affect the major organs
the number one cause of death in those with diabetes is heart disease
Glycemic Response
Speed of glucose absorption, level of blood glucose, and the return to normal
• a LOW glycemic response is desired
