What did the red crosses and writing on people’s doors mean?
It was a sign to others that the people living in the house were infected with the plague. The words were a plea to God to let them live as at the time some people belived that the plague was a punishment from God.

Why did Pepys by a roll of tobacco to smell and chew?
It was because at the time, people didn’t know the cause of the plague, so most people believed that it was because of miasma which is bad air. People baught flowers or rolls of tobacco to get rid of the ‘bad air.’
What did people at the time think caused the plague?
There were many theories because there was no research. Some of those theories included poisonous air (miasma), the position of the planets, a punishment from God, or spread by touching a cat or a dog.
Name 5 ways people tried to prevent the spread of the plague.
- Dogs and cats are to be killed and aren’t allowed in the city.
- Victims’ clothing must be burned.
- Homeowners must sweep the street outside of thier home.
- Pubs and theatres are to be closed.
- The dead must only be buried at in a special plague cemetery.
What was the real cause of the plague?
The plague came from germs in the black rats’ blood which were carried by the fleas and passed on to people.
Why was Charles II given the title of ‘Merry Monarch’?
Is is because he brought back all the entertainment and holidays that Cromwell had banned. He himself enjoyed taking part in various activites such as visiting the theatre and racing dwon the Thames in a yacht.
