In what ways have Tudor schools changed since Tudor times? Name 5 ways.
- Children aren’t allowed to be punished through physical abuse such as getting whipped or beaten.
- School is more accessable to people and not only reserved for the wealthy.
- Is it now very very common to see girls in classrooms.
- We now use much more advanced resources for learning, with some schools using technology.
- Instead of starting school at 6 and going home at 5, most schools start school around 8 and leave school around 3:30.
Define ‘birch’.
A bundle of birch twigs or even a whip used to hit children as punishment.
Define ‘quill pen’.
A pen made from a feather dipped in ink to write.
Define ‘hornbook’.
A flat, double sided wooden padel with the Lord’s prayer on one side and the other side for practicing writing/maths.
Name 5 school rules from the Tudor times.
- No arriving late
- No forgetting your books
- No playing cards or dice
- No stealing, swearing or lying
- No making fun of/bullying another pupil
Define ‘grammar school’.
A school that taught mainly Greek and Latin grammar.
Why did so few poor children go to school during Tudor times?
It is because poor families were not able to afford the sachool fees, resources/equipment as well as candles. There would aslo be a high chance of poor children getting bullied by rich kids due to their social status.
Name and describe 3 ways people had fun during the Tudor times.
- Bet on blood sports. A bear or bull would be tied to a pole and attacked by dogs. People would bet on whether the dogs would win or the bear.
- Join a football match. Villages or towns would play football with each other using a pig’s bladder filled with sawdust and peas as the ball. Whichever team brings the ball to the other team’s town/village centre wins.
- Shin-hacking. Two people would kick eachother’s shins with heavy boots until one of them couldn’t tolerate the pain anymore and gave up.
Name 4 forms of entertainment that were enjoyed by both the rich and the poor.

Why were some of the sports during the Tudor times banned?
It is because they were too violent and would cause a lot of chaos or destruction in the region. Especially football which invloved many people from two towns/villages.
What were Tudor schools like?
Tudor schools were strict and only for wealthy families with a lot of money. They followed a timetable and would learn subjects such as Latin, grammar, maths and bible study. If they broke any of the school rules, they would be punished by the teacher through beatings with a birch.

- Gentlemen
- The richest, attented extravagant events, usually lived in country houses. - Citizen
- Rich but not as rich as the gentlemen, sold goods, they were merchants, usually lived in town homes. - Yeomen
- They were farmers, owned or rented land, lived in farmhouses. - Labourers
- Poorest, peasants, worked for other people.
Name and explain 5 causes of poverty in Britain.
- Unemploymen. Those who could noy get jobs would not have the money to survive.
- Large families. Families with more children struggled because there were more people to cater for and not enough money to support.
- Old age. Old people are unable to work and therefore have no income.
- Illness. Those off work due to illness would not be paid as well as the cost of medical advice and treatment.
- Dissability. Loss of earnings due to inability to work.
Why do you think Tudor Kings and Queens treated sturdy beggars so brutally?
It is because they did not have a liscense to beg. They would trick people into getting money and beg on the streets which was very unappealing to upper class people and the Tudor Kings/Queens.
What was another term for beggars?
Vagabonds
Who were the ‘vagabonds’?
They were beggars - a mixture of unemployed soldiers and farmers, women and children, and the old and sick.
Define ‘sturdy beggars’
Fit enough vagabonds that would use tricks and con people into giving them money.
How did some of the poorer people in Tudor times try to make money? Provide 2 examples with explainations.
- Counterfeit Crank. They would dress in rags and suck soap so that they frothed at the mouth. They did this to make people pity them and give them money.
- Clapper dungeon. They would cut their skin to make themselves bleed and cover their cuts with dirty rags to make it look worse. They hoped people would feel sorry for them and give them money for ‘medical attention’.
Describe 2 ways people tortured prisoners
The Rack: the prisoner was stretched on a rack for hours.
The Press: the prisoner laid hunter a metal or wooden board and heavy boulders/rocks were placed on top of them.
