Motion of a limb away from the midline.
Abduction
Motion of a limb toward the midline
Adduction
The front surface of the body; the side facing you in the standard anatomic position.
Anterior
A body part or condition that appears on both sides of the midline.
Bilateral
The vowel used to combine two root words or a word root or suffix
Combination Vowel (“o”, “I”, “e”)
Farther inside the body and away from the skin
(I.E. - What is the common direction, movement, and position term used to describe, “farther inside the body and away from the skin”)
Deep, means further inside the body or tissue and away from the skin.(Ex:” a deep laceration involves a deep cut deeper into the tissue such as with a knife”)
Farther from the trunk or nearer to the free end of the extemity
Distal
Term used to describe the relationship of any two structures on an extremity.
The posterior surface of the body, to include the back of the hand.
Dorsal
The straightening of a joint
Extension
The bending of a joint
Flexion
An inclined position in which the head of the bed is raised.
Fowler Position
Below a body part, or nearer to the feet.
Inferior
Parts of the body that lie farther from the midline; also called outer structures.
Lateral
Parts of the body that lie closer to the midline; also called inner structures.
Medial
The forward facing part of the hand in the anatomic position.
Palmar
The bottom surface of the foot.
Plantar
The back surface of the body; the side away from you in the standard anatomic position.
Posterior
The part of a term that appears before a word root changing the meaning of the term.
Prefix
Lying face down
Prone
Closer to the trunk
Proximal
Describes the sections of the abdominal cavity, in which two imaginary lines intersect at the umbilicus, dividing into four equal areas.
Quadrants
The part of a term that comes after the root word, at the end of the term.
Suffix
Closer to or on the skin
Superficial
Above a body part or nearer to the head.
Superior
Lying face up
Supine
The anterior surface of the body
Ventral
The main part of a term that contains the primary meaning.
Word root
Suffix Meaning: below, under (hint, there is two)
“Sub” and “Infra”
Ex: -Subcutaneous
-Infraclavicular
Common word root meaning: Disease

“Pathy”
Common word root meaning: Cavity, channel, or hollow space
Sinus
Common suffix pertaining to eating or swallowing
-Phagia
Common suffix pertaining to speech
-Phasia
Common suffix pertaining to vomiting
-Emesis
Common Suffix pertaining to puncturing an organ or body cavity, often to drain excess fluid or obtain a sample for analysis
-Centesis
