Why did people talk of the end of philosophy around time of Marx?
If see end as aim then achieving the good life (Marx) another way would be seeing Hegel as end. In removing gods eye and seeing reason in social relations ie taking out metaphysics. Others see him as ultimate metaphysician.
Why was philosophy under attack or criticised at this time?
Philosophy becomes political for first time and Hegel Herder etc put history in. Major social changes mean easy to paint philosophy as regressive esp if as
Marx Nietzsche did you regard metaphysics as covert theology.
Who were the young Hegelians?
Feuerbach and young Marx who critique Hegel but do not completely reject his idea. Main focus is religion but objective is social transformation.
What 20th century philosophical movement has echoes in early - mid 19th century.
Analytical focus on logics and language as resolving questions has echoes in this period as some questioned whether anything except from human perspective has validity.
What change is wrought to religion in early 19th century?
Subject to history in new way. Gospels seem dodgy and religion as having value away from literal truth.
What view of religion would young hegelians have had?
That it reinforces hierarchies and makes life of poor more tolerable. Opium of people.
What is the explicit tension with the Enlightenment that comes to the fore in this period?
That rather than reason solving problems becomes view that life painful and transient. So shift to focus on how humans can contribute to future of species. Is this real consolation though? Or do people end up being sacrificed to nation.
