Chapter 3d Schelling Flashcards
What does schelling accuse Fichte of?
Reducing nature to being an object of human purposes
Why is there a new appreciation of beauty in the 18th century?
Search for new orientation in world lacking theological foundations
What do Kants 3rd critique and Schelling early work have in common?
Art as way of understanding relationship between mind and world
What do schelling and Spinoza have in common
Both distinction between nature productive and products of nature
What does schellings philosophy of nature aim to do
Connect natures unconscious productivity with minds conscious productivity
What are the divisions in German philosophy about how mind and world relate?
Between those seeking complete conceptual account and those appealing non-conceptual intuition
What is the danger?
Neglect of rational argument
Is schelling falling into this?
Maybe not. He says art is objective manifestation of intellectual intuition. Art showing what philosophy cannot say
How does this differ from Fichte?
If Intellectual intuition is located I. Subject how can it be justificatory in philosophy. For schelling manifests unconscious productivity in the objective.
Why does art matter?
It can be interpreted in new ways. Infinite and shows how world finite knowledge transcended.
Does schelling maintain art as reconciliation of subjective and objective.
No. Comes to think this would just mean freedom part of overall purpose if nature and everything decided in advance.
What does later schelling think?
Radicalises freedom. Thinks necessary that evil possible; contingent open-endedness then essence freedom lacking. Questions idea that reason can account for itself and so at odds with Idealist project of reconciling mind/world.
How does he come to be at odds with Hegel?
Thinks Hegel (seeing P in terms of how man and his activity make world comprehensible) fails to confront dissonance between thought and being. Who is there not nothing?
