Chapter 4 Early Romantic Philosophy Flashcards
What was the early Romantic view of philosophy?
They thought point not episitemology; if knew everything still wouldnt be satisfied, wouldnt satisfy scepticism. So asks radical questions of philosophy.
What was Hegels view scepticism
Depends on what causes it; fact that truths negated.
What is Hegel’s view of relationship of subject and object to reality?
Thinks reality is process of subject and object interacting
What is Schlegel’s view
Schelegel in 1801 points in direction Hegel will take as ‘determinate negation’. Says ironic because pos assertions ]can always be negated like ironis statement revoking literal meaning
What is Romantic Philosophy’s view of irony?
That there is no end.
What did Novalis say?
Everywhere seek unconditioned and only find things
How did they view Absolute
It can only be known negatively. To understand Abolsute would have to know it first. Like intellectual initution which they didint like, Dissatisfaction with limitations of finite knowledge leads to sense of infinite rather than there being founding knowledge of essential nature of infinite,.
So why would philosophy be more like art?
Endless interpretation; new perspectives/
What do Hegel and the early Romantics share?
Truths are transient
What are their differences?
Subject overcomes constradictory nature of modern reality and positions which think that subject will find only that which mirrors itself back to it.
So why might aim of GI be an illusion?
?
Because cannot make thought wholly transparent to itself. [Cannot get reason to know itslelf] Jacobi and Schliermacher object on this basis.
Why is Hegel to so powerful according to modern commentators?
Denting him requires appeal to immediate. All appeals to sense certainty must be questioned by shared social norms. Any attempt to circumvent itself requires appealing to other norms.
What might the problem be with Nietzsche view of motivation of thought?
Unconscious drives of subject rather than pure search for truth. But this must be justified. Freudian slips are space of reasons ie explaining mechanism of repression.
What do Romantics think search for completeness leaves out?
May exclude something essential about our relationship with world
Why might Romantic approach not overcome homelessness?
We should be reconciled knowing that Absolute cannot be known but wont be because core human condition is longing. For this we need forms of expression not fully comprehensive
