Chapter 5- Macronutrients metabolism Flashcards
What energy source is used and provides the required energy for exercise that is short duration, weight lifting?
PCr ( immediate energy system) and intramuscular stores of ATP
Name two factor during exercise that affects ATP pathways
Exercise intensity and duration
For intense exercise ( one to two minutes), what pathway provides the majority of the energy required?
The anaerobic reactions of glycolysis ( short term energy system) provide the majority of energy.
When exercise is more than a few minutes, what pathway is used to provide energy?
Aerobic pathway with oxygen uptake capacity would be the important factor for long term energy system.
When you do marathon running, cycling, and major intense aerobic exercise, what pathway would provide the primary fuel?
Muscle glycogen and blood glucose. Glycogen play an important role in energy metabolism
Why does intense exercise stimulates glycogen phosphorylase? What stimulates it?
The hormones output increase stimulates an increase in glycogen phosphorylase to activate glycogenolysis in the liver and muscles because in early minutes of exercise, oxygen intake fails to meet the energy requirement and stored glycogen becomes the primary energy contributor because it can provide energy without oxygen
Name two main macronutrients that provides energy for ATP re synthesis during exercise.
- liver and muscle glycogen
2. triacylglycerol
