Chapter 5: Kinetics Flashcards
1
Q
Describe a Boltzmann curve and explain the effect of increasing temperature
A
2
Q
Describe collision theory
A
For a reaction to occur, particles need to collide with enough energy to break bonds. To increase the number of succesful collisions, we can
- Increase temperature (more kinetic energy in each collision and more frequent collisions)
- Increase concentrations (more particles in given volume, so more frequent collisions)
3
Q
A succesful collision…
A
… is one where the collision has energy greater than the activation energy
4
Q
Endothermic reaction
A
Takes in heat from surroundings (gets colder)
5
Q
Exothermic reaction
A
gives out heat to the surroundings (gets hotter)
6
Q
A catalyst
A
Speeds up a reaction by providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy
