Chapter 27: Aromatic Chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the bonding and structure of benzene
A
- regular hexagon of carbon atoms, each bonded to a single hydrogen atom,
- 6 delocalised electrons in the centre,
2
Q
Physical properties of arenes
A
- colourless liquid at room temperature,
- has a higher boiling point than hexane due to benzene’s flat, hexagonal molecules which can pack together well so they are harder to seperate.
- Do not mix with water, but mixed with other hydrocarbons and non-polar solvents
3
Q
What is the name of this compound

A
Methylbenzene
