Chapter 14: Alkenes Flashcards
What is the general formula for an alkene?
CnH2n+2
Do alkenes have double bonds?
Yes
How do you name an alkene?
-ene
What types of isomer can alkenes form?
Chain, position, geometric/stereoisomerism
How do you decide if it is an E or Z isomer?
Z = chains with greatest atomic mass on same side. E = chains with greatest atomic mass on opposite side
Are alkenes soluble in water?
No
Boiling point trend as carbon chain increases?
Boiling point increases as carbon chain length increases because there are increased VdW forces.
What reactions can alkenes undergo?
Combustion, electrophilic addition
What is the combustion of alkenes reaction?
Alkene + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
What is an electrophile?
An electron pair acceptor, attracted to areas of electron density
Describe the mechanism for electrophilic addition of alkenes
Electrophile attracted to the double bond. The electrophile accepts a pair of electrons from the double bond. A carbocation is formed. A negatively charged ion forms a bond with the carbocation.
