Chapter 5 Heat Sugar Flashcards
Examples of positive feedback
Childbirth and blood clotting
Heat exhaustion vs heat stroke
Your body is tired and dehydrated from maintaining temperature
Temperature is too high
Low blood sugar
Caused by exercise or normal metabolism
When extreme you can experience sweaty, dizzy, hungry, tingly lips, fast heartbeat or feeling emotional
High blood sugar
Caused by eating carbs
When extreme can cause nausea, vomiting, thirst, short of breath, weakness and confusion
Glucoreceptors
In the alpha and beta cells in the islets of langerhans in the pancreas
Modulator of glucoregulation
Alpha cells release glucagon in event of low blood sugar
Beta cells release insulin in event of high blood sugar
Mode of action of insulin
Glycogenesis. Production of glycogen in liver, skeletal muscles and adipose
Glycolysis. Increases cell permeability to glucose
Lipogenesis production of triglycerides
Increases protein synthesis
Mode of acrion of glucagon
Glycogenolysis breaks glycogen into glucose
Gluconeogenesis new glucose
Absorption and digestion of new glucose
Aided by adrenaline (more increases glycogenolysis)
