Chapter 5: Health Screening Flashcards
As a general rule, we refer clients with two or more risk factors:
(list the factors)
- Age (males over 45, or females over 55)
- Inactivity
- Smoker
- High stress
- Obesity
Under which circumstances must you refer a client?
- Recent orthopedic surgery
- Diabetes
- Hyper/hypo-thyroid activity which regulates metabolism
- Hernia
- Hypertension (higher chances of a stroke >140/90)
- Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol)
- Respiratory illness
- Bronchitis, asthma, chronic breathing problems or any respiratory problems
- Pregnancy (PARmed-X)
- Illness/infection
- Family history of Heart Disease
- Possible pregnancy
What are Beta Blockers?
Beta Blockers artificially lower the heart rate. These interfere with the client’s ability to do cardio exercises. Makes it near impossible to get into the Target Heart Rate Zone
What is an example of a diuretic? Does it have an effect on heart rate?
Caffeine and alcohol. These may increase HR.
Before you design a program for your client, you will need to do some basic physical testing. This includes what?
Taking their blood pressure, heart rate, simple postural analysis, balance, muscle tightness/imbalances, and observing their gait
What is a healthy resting blood pressure?
120/80 (135/85 is still considered normal)
What is a high resting blood pressure (hypertension)?
140/90 or over
What is a normal range for resting heart rate?
60-100 bpm
What is a simple balance test you can use for seniors 65 and over?
Have them stand on one leg and see if they wobble
What are some lower body extremity disorders and neurological problems which require a doctor’s okay before you train them?
Lower extremity disorders: ACL, hip/knee replacements, ankle problems
Neurological problems: stroke, Parkinson’s, MS
List the six components of function
Range of motion, strength, muscle recruitment, endurance, proprioception and balance
What is considered a low resting heart rate?
Under 60
What are some factors that can elevate blood pressure?
Atherosclerosis, some medication, obesity and stress
What are some factors that could cause a person’s RHR to increase?
The person may:
- have recently drunk caffeine
- be nervous, rushed, or hyper
- be on medication
- have just worked out
What is recognized as the most preventable health risk?
Sedentary lifestyle
