Chapter 5 - DC Motor Characteristics Flashcards
1
Q
Types of DC Motors
A
- ) Shunt
- ) Series
- ) Compound (A Combination of Shunt & Series)
2
Q
Explain why a Series DC motor should not be started on no Load?
A
If a Series Motor is started with no load the motor could reach a critical speed causing Major Damage.
3
Q
Describe a Shunt DC Motor
A
- Field Winding’s are in Parallel with the Armature.
- this keeps current flow through the field winding uneffected by current change through the armature with varying loads.
- so Torque developed varies directly with Armature Current
4
Q
Describe a DC Series Motor?
A
- Field winding in this motor are in series with the Armature.
- Field Windings consist of less turn than a shunt motor but windings are made with thicker/heavier wire.
- because of the series layout changes in armature current also effects current flowing through the Field Winding’s
5
Q
Describe a DC Compound Motor
A
- This type of motor consist of both methods of Series and Shunt Motors.
- so two field windings in the Circuit one in Series and on in Parallel with the Armature.
