Chapter 5 Consciousness Flashcards
Consciousness
Is the state of being aware. Reflection, not just action.
Circadian Rhythm
Predictable hormone, temperature, and wakefulness levels that are synchronized with parts of the day.
Sleep Cycle
Brain sends slow and regular alpha waves while awake. Stage 1: 5 mins of hypnogogic sensations and erratically slower waves. Stage 2: 20 mins long with sleep spindles. Stage 3 & 4: slow-wave sleep. Move back to stage 2 and experience REM.
Sleep Apnea
People stop breathing intermittently during sleep. Lack of oxygen wakes them long enough to get a snort of air.
Dream Theories:
Freud
Activation-Synthesis
Information-Processing
Freud: dreams hid latent content that would wake the dreamer. Activation-synthesis: as random neurons fire, we try to make sense of images. Information-processing: dreams consolidate information and memories.
Psychoactive Drugs
Depressants slow bodily and neural activity (i.e. alcohol, barbiturates, opiates). Stimulants increase neural and bodily activity. Hallucinogens distort perceptions and produce sensations that have no physical basis.
