Chapter 2 Methods and History Flashcards
Wilhelm Wundt
Set up the first psychology lab.
Structuralists
…study the structure of the mind and the basic elements of of consciousness. Favored introspection.
Introspection
…involves reporting one’s feelings “objectively”.
Psychology
Is the scientific study of human behavior and mental process.
Edward Titchener
…set up the first psychology lab in the USA.
Functionalism
…was created in reaction to structuralism. Functionalism studies how the mind adapts and functions in its environment.
William James
…was a functionalist who wrote the first psychology textbook.
The Biological Approach
…considers how physiological and biochemical processes influence psychological phenomena.
Psychodynamic Approach
…studies unconscious motives (namely sexual and aggressive ones) and the way one copes with the drives.
Sigmund Freud
…is the father of psychodynamics.
The Behaviorist Approach
…holds that behavior results from learning through experience.
Cognitive Approach
…was created in reaction to behaviorism. It focuses on things you cannot observe like memory, thinking, language, and feelings.
Humanists
…believe that people are unique and cannot be understood through calculations and that people desire optimal growth.
The Experimental Group
…is exposed to the ‘cause’, or receives the real deal
The Control Group
…is NOT exposed to the ‘cause’ or the real deal.
Independent Variable
In an experiment, the independent variable is the ‘cause’
The Dependent Variable
The ‘effect’ in an experiment is the dependent variable.
Placebo Effect
The placebo effect happens when subjects in an experiment behave differently b/c they know they’re being exposed to special treatment.
Placebo
A placebo is a fake special treatment given to subjects to determine the extent of the placebo effect.
Blind Study
A blind study is when subjects don’t know if they are receiving the real deal or a placebo.
Double-Blind Study
Double-blind study is when the experimenters don’t know who is receiving the placebo.
Correlation studies
Correlation studies assess the relationship between 2 variables.
Positive Relationship
A positive relationship means that the high scores of one variable is paired with high scores of another variable, i.e. height and weight.
Negative relationship
A negative relationship means that low scores of one variable are paired with high scores of the other variable, i.e. job satisfaction and absenteeism.
Case Study
A case study is an in depth analysis of only 1 person.
Naturalistic Observation
Naturalistic observation is the study of behavior as it occurs in real life settings. The observers must be unobtrusive and agree on what is happening.
