Responsibilities of alpha waves

A

Relaxed on eyes closed
8-12 Hz (medium frequency) bigger amplitude

Q

What are the 4 stages of sleep?

A

Stage 1: theta activity (3.5-7.5 Hz, lasts about 10 minutes)
Stage 2: theta activity, sleep spindles (12-14 Hz, lasts about 15 minutes) the k complexes drown out external environment so we stay asleep
Stages 3 & 4: (slow wave sleep) delta waves. (Large in amplitude low in frequency, 3.5 Hz)

Q

Explain BATD

A

B- awake and alert
A- relaxed, eyes closed
T- k complexes stage 1 and 2
D- stages 3 & 4 harder to wake people up!

16
Q

What are the types of stimulant drugs?

A

Caffeine, nicotine, cocaine and ecstasy

17
Q

Explain opiates!

A

Act on endorphins receptors to reduce pain and are less addictive when used for pain relief. Decrease your CNS activity. Decease sex drive and can induce sleep, euphoria make you feel on top of the world. Ex, morphine and heroin

18
Q

Name the effects of hallucinogens and an example of one

A

Distortion of reality, alerts emotions and thoughts. Ex. LSD- small amounts last long, acts on serotonin receptors. They block the effects of alcohol
