Chapter 5 Case study plus more Flashcards
Why is unconscious mind thought to be superior to conscious mind
When making complex decisions the conscious mind can only hold so much information however the unconscious mind can hold more
What is the case study about?
That unconscious thought might be superior to conscious thought under certain conditions
Explain the method of the two studies- what was the conscious thought condition and the unconscious thought condition?
3 groups: immediate decision condition had to choose which roommate had best qualities with no time to reflect. The conscious thought group had time to reflect on which roommate sounded the best and the third is unconscious thought condition so they were given a task and then had to pick the best roommate choice right after being presented with a task
What are biological rhythms?
Periodic fluctuations in physiological functioning
How are circadian rhythms related to falling asleep?
When body temp drops you generally fall asleep and wake up as is rises. People can either be night person or morning person these preferences reflect individual variations in circadian rhythms
Which physiological structures control our biological clocks?
Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) sends signals to the nearby pineal gland whose secretion of the hormone MELATONIN
How are circadian rhythms related to jet leg?
Your internal “biological” clock keeps the same time but the official clock time changes so you then go to sleep at the “wrong” time. jet leg differs from person to person usually takes a day to readjust for each time zone crossed. Generally it’s easier going west and lengthen your day than east
How do rotating shifts tend to affect sleep?
Studies show workers get less sleep when they go on rotating shifts.
What are the pros and cons of melatonin?
Melatonin can put your sleep cycles it circadian rhythms back in order the effects have been inconsistent
What is the history of hypnosis?
Franz Anton Mesmer- an 18th century Austrian physician. He claimed to cure people of illness through “laying on of hands.” Or the power of suggestion
Who popularized the term hypnotism and where did the word come from?
Braid, the Greek word for sleep
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a systematic procedure that typically produces a heightened state of suggestibility.
What is hypnotic susceptibility?
Your responsiveness to being hypnotized
What are the three components of high hypnotizability?
Absorption, dissociation, and suggestibility.
What are some prominent hypnotic phenomena?
Anesthesia, sensory distortions and hallucinations, disinhibition, and posthypnotic suggestions an amnesia
What is dissociation?
A splitting off of mental processes into two separate simultaneous streams of awareness- Hilgard theorizes that hypnosis splits consciousness into two streams
What is meditation and how is it practiced?
A family of practices that train attention to heighten awareness and bring mental processes under greater voluntary control
What are the two main approaches to meditation?
Focused attention or open monitoring
How does meditation affect physiological responding?
Meditation leads to a potentially beneficial physiological state characterized by suppression of bodily arousal
What is the evidence on the long term benefits of meditation?
Meditation is associated with lower levels of stress hormones and enhanced immune response
Name the components of addiction!!
Tolerance, withdrawal, and dependency!!
What are psychoactive drugs?
They are depressants (downers) or stimulants
What are the effects of depressants?
Decrease in CNS activity, act on GABA receptors, creates feelings of relaxation and drowsiness
What receptors does alcohol act on?
GABA, endorphins and dopamine
