Q

Explain the method of the two studies- what was the conscious thought condition and the unconscious thought condition?

A

3 groups: immediate decision condition had to choose which roommate had best qualities with no time to reflect. The conscious thought group had time to reflect on which roommate sounded the best and the third is unconscious thought condition so they were given a task and then had to pick the best roommate choice right after being presented with a task

Q

How are circadian rhythms related to falling asleep?

A

When body temp drops you generally fall asleep and wake up as is rises. People can either be night person or morning person these preferences reflect individual variations in circadian rhythms

Q

How are circadian rhythms related to jet leg?

A

Your internal “biological” clock keeps the same time but the official clock time changes so you then go to sleep at the “wrong” time. jet leg differs from person to person usually takes a day to readjust for each time zone crossed. Generally it’s easier going west and lengthen your day than east

15
Q

What is dissociation?

A

A splitting off of mental processes into two separate simultaneous streams of awareness- Hilgard theorizes that hypnosis splits consciousness into two streams

16
Q

What is meditation and how is it practiced?

A

A family of practices that train attention to heighten awareness and bring mental processes under greater voluntary control

17
Q

What are the two main approaches to meditation?

A

Focused attention or open monitoring

18
Q

How does meditation affect physiological responding?

A

Meditation leads to a potentially beneficial physiological state characterized by suppression of bodily arousal

19
Q

What is the evidence on the long term benefits of meditation?

A

Meditation is associated with lower levels of stress hormones and enhanced immune response

20
Q

Name the components of addiction!!

A

Tolerance, withdrawal, and dependency!!

21
Q

What are psychoactive drugs?

A

They are depressants (downers) or stimulants

22
Q

What are the effects of depressants?

A

Decrease in CNS activity, act on GABA receptors, creates feelings of relaxation and drowsiness

23
Q

What receptors does alcohol act on?

A

GABA, endorphins and dopamine

24
Q

What is Korsokoffs syndrome?

A

Long term use of alcohol and you can’t form new memories or you get them jumbled
