Chapter 5: Consciousness Flashcards
What is consciousness
Persons subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of the world and self awareness
Circannual Rhythm
Yearly rhythm cycles the body adapts
ex. hibrination
Infradian rhythm
Rhythm that lasts over a day
Ultraradian rhythm
Frequent biological rhythms (ex. heart rate, urination)
Circadian Rhythm
Internally driven daily forces of approx 24hrs affecting physiological and behavioural processes
Melitonin
Sleep Hormone
Entrainment - circadian rhythms
When biological rhythms become synchronized to external cues such as light, temp or clocks
Endogenous rhythms - circadian rhythms
Bioloogical rhythms that are generated by our body independent of exteral cues such as light
What is REM Sleep associated with
Formation of new synapses, and growth of myelin on neurons
Chronotype
Tendency to prefer sleeping earlier or later in given 24-hr period
Polysomnography
Set of objective measurements used to examine physiological variables during sleep
Beta waves
High frequency, low amplitude waves
Stage 1 sleep
Brain waves slow down and become higher in aplitude - theta waves
Stage 2 sleep
Brain waves continue to slow
Stage 3 sleep
Brain waves continue to slow and assume new form called delta waves
Stage 4 sleep
More difficult to waken during this time
REM sleep
Characterized by quickening brain waves, inhibited body movement, and rapid eye movements (REM)
Restore and repeair hypothesis
Idea body needs to restore energy levels and repeair any wear and tear during sleep
Preserve and protect hypothesis
Suggests 2 adaptive functions of sleep are preserving energy and protecting the organism from harm
Sleep deprevation
When individual cannot or does not sleep
Sleep displacement
Occurs when people are prevented from sleeping at normal time, although they may be able to sleep earlier or later in the day than usual
Jet lag
Disconfort person feels when sleep cycles are out of synch with light and darkness
Freuds view to dreaming
Unconsious expression of wish fufillment
Manifest content
Involves the images and storylines we dream about
Latent content
Symbolic meaning of dream build on suppressed sexual or agressive urges
Problem solving theory
Theory that thoughts and concerns are continious from waking to sleeping and dreams may facilitate finding solutions to problems encountered while awake
Activation synthesis hypothesis
Suggests dreams arise from brain activity originating from bursts of excitatory messages from the pons
Insomnia
Disorder characterized by extreme lack of sleep
Nightmares
Particularly vivid and disturbing dreams that occur during REM cycle
Night terrors
Intense bouts of panic and arousal that awaken the individual, typically in a heightened emotional state
REM behaviour disorder
Condition that does not show the typical restriction of movement during REM sleep, sleepers appear to be acting out the content of their dreams
Somnambulism
Sleep walking, disorder that involves wandering and performing acitivites while asleep
Sexomnia
Condition where individuals engage in sexual acitivty such of touching of themseleves, others, vocalizations, or sex talk while alseep
Sleep Apnea
Disorder with temporary inability to breathe during sleep
Narcolepsy
Extreme daytime sleepiness or sleep attacks
