Chapter 5 Active Transport Flashcards
In what direction does active transport move molecules?
it moves them up or against the concentration gradient from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concetration
What does active transport require of cell?
to expend energy
What type of molecules are moved by passive transport?
large macromolecules, wastes, nutrients, proteins, and toxins
What holds the large particles moving into and out of the cell?
the vesicles
How does endocytosis move materials into the cell?
the cells ingest external materials by folding the cell membrane around the materials and forming a pouch in the cell membrane. the pouch ten pinches off from the membrane and moves into the cell where it becomes a membrane-bound organelle called a vesicle.
What is pinocytosis?
a type of endocytosis in which the vesicle contains solvents of fluids
What is phagocytosis?
a type of endocytosis where the vesicle contains large particles or whole cells
How does our immune system use phagocytosis?
it uses it to engulf and digest invading bacteria
How do single celled organisms use phagocytosis?
to feed
How does exocytosis move materials out of the cell?
vesicles packaged in the golgi apparatus fuse with the cell membrane, releasing their contents into the external environment
