American Plan
Those who have little contact with the guests.
Back of the House
accommodation that is generally family-owned and managed, accommodates three to ten groups per night, and includes a family-style breakfast.
Bed and Breakfast
(BP) Room rate that includes a full American breakfast: juice, coffee, sausage or bacon, and toast
Bermuda Plan
A luxury-style hotel designed to cater to guests willing to pay higher fees for top-level quality and very sophisticated levels of service.
Boutique Hotel
A situation in which a franchisor allows two independent units to locate too near each other, causing loss of revenue for one or both.
Cannibalization
Alcohol service in which guests pay for their own drinks.
Cash Bar
A single corporate identity that operates more than one property, with all properties reporting to corporate headquarters.
Chain Ownership
An individually owned, apartment- style residence located in an area filled with recreational amenities; may be rented out to other travellers when not occupied by the owner.
Condominium
A hotel with conference facilities that caters to large groups. E.g., Holiday Inn.
Conference Hotel
A reservation at a hotel or lodging establishment that is held through prepayment or with a confirmed source of payment.
Confirmed Reservation
A hotel room rate that includes the room and a continental breakfast.
Continental Plan
Reduced rates designed to encourage sales to companies
Corporate Rate
The price/cost of a particular service for a day’s period. In some markets it is referred to as “per diem” (cost that an organization will pay for one days’ work) and often translates to a 7.5 hour work day.

Hotel room with two double beds
Double Double
Accomidation that is a working ranch. Guests help in everyday work or a luxury ranch resort for horseback riding, swimming, biking, or tennis.
Dude or Guest Ranch
A hotel rate that includes room, no meals
European Plan
Accomidation plan where no expense for children under given age to stay with parents at a hotel.
Family Plan
A business purchased as a turn-key operation with everything in its place
Franchise
The purchaser of a franchise operation
Franchisee
The company that owns the franchise rights to a product and sells it to other operator/ investors
Franchisor
Employees who deal actively with customers, usually in a hotel or a restaurant setting
Front of House
The client has supplied a credit card number and must pay for the room whether or not they use it , unless the reservation is cancelled by a certain time and a cancellation number is obtained
Guaranteed Reservation
Hotel room includes a bar and sitting area for guests
Hospitality Suite
A lodge with communal washrooms and bedrooms for 4-20 people.
Hostel
Has a central lobby, it’s rooms are accessible from the lobby.
Hotel
Usually found in smaller towns. Often a historic building.
Inn
Method of hotel management operation in which one company owns property, the other one operates it
Management Contract
A hotel room rate that includes room breakfast and lunch or dinner
Modified American Plan
Tourist accomidations that provide free parking and access to guests room directly from parking lot
Motel
Selling more rooms, airplane seats, etc, than exist on the assumption not every reservation will be picked up
Overbook
The published full price for a hotel room
Rack Rate
Independently owned and operated hotels working together under a brand name in order to receive brand-name recognition, access to global reservation system and global marketing strategies, e.g Best Western
Referral System
( Real Estate Investment Trusts)
A company that buys hotels or resort properties, and then sells shares of the property on the stock market
REITS
A destination hotel that is usually located in the countryside, near water or mountains. Resorts provide their guest with a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities, indoor services such as spas, pools, and workout rooms, and a varity of in-house dinning experiances
Resort
A discount rate for block bookings
Run of the House Rate
A hotel room occupied by one person
Single (referring to a hotel room)
Resort that encourage healthy rejuvenating activities such as massage therapy, body wraps, steam baths. Generally serve specialty healthy meals
Spa
A hotel room with one or more bedrooms and a sitting room and or parlour
Suite
buying a vacation segment, usually of two weeks, in a condominium unit
Time Sharing
service provided by luxury hotels, in which bed spread is folded down and chocolate is placed on the pillow
Turn Down Service
A hotel room with two single beds.
Twin
The practice of sending guests who have reservations that cannot be honoured to other available hotels.
Walking a Guest
Special discounted rates used by hotels that rely upon corporate business during the week. These discounted rates encourage business people to bring their families in for a weekend vacation, or encourage locals to use the hotel and it’s services for a quick weekend getaway.
Weekend Rate
A list of all the products a restaurant sells.
Menu
A chain of restaurants in which one person or company controls all the units; typically, all restaurants have similar decor, menu, and management style.
Multi Unit Corporate Chain
Usually found in smaller town. Often historical, renovated to meet guest expectations.
Inn
