What does salutary neglect mean?
Not strictly enforcing laws
What three things lead to individualism being strong in the colonies?
Colonies made their own laws, their land was cheaper, and England didn’t strictly enforce laws
Why did England place a number of taxes (acts) against the colonists?
To help pay of their war debts from the French and Indian War
What is importing or exporting without paying proper taxes on goods? (Also GB’s top priority in the colonies at this time)
Smuggling
How was the Sugar Act supposed to stop smuggling?
Lowered the tax on molasses to try and convince people o stop smuggling in 1764
What was the problem for the colonists with the Sugar Act? (What British law was contradicted?)
British officers were allowed to seize goods from smugglers without going to court, this contradicted the British law of “innocent until proven guilty”
What was the Stamp Act?
Placed a tax on almost all printed material in the colonies

A secret society formed to protect the rights of the colonists & fight taxation

What was important about the Declaratory Act?
Stated that England had the right to tax the colonies in all cases
What was important about the Townshend Acts?
Taxed imported goods before they arrived in the colonies
Who owned the ship Liberty?
John Hancock
What was required of colonial citizens when the Quartering Act was passed?
If the barracks provided by the colonies were too small, colonists had to house British soldiers
