Chapter 5 Flashcards
Symmetrical Differentiation
Stem cell division will result in 2 stem cell or 2 committed cells. Also known as “population asymmetry”
Population Asymmetry
Stem cell division will result in 2 stem cell or 2 committed cells. Also known as “Symmetrical Differentiation”
Asymmetry Division
Stem cell division will result in one stem cell and one committed cell.
Adult Stem Cell lineage
Multipotent stem cell -> committed stem cell -> progenitor cell -> differentiated
Multipotent stem cell
Capable of forming numerous types of cells
Committed stem cell
Capable of making one or very few types of cells
progenitor cell
proliferates many times but is transient in that it will become a differentiated cell eventually.
totipotent
These cells are capable of producing all types of a lineage. Produce the embryo and extra embryonic tissue in mammals its the first 4-8 cells after fertilization
pluripotent
The stem cells that make up the embryo
Extra embryonic tissue
EX: placental, cord
Multipotent
Stem cells for each specific organ. Used to regenerate cells for the organ its in.
Hematopoietic stem cells
Necessary for blood formation. Multipoint system
Stem Cell niche
Is a micro environment that regulates quiesents division or determination.
