Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Differentiation
Generation of cell diversity
Morphogenesis
Differentiated cells are organized into intricate tissues and organs. cells divide, migrate and die.
Fertilization
Fusion of the mature sex cells, the sperm and egg.
Gametes
The egg and sperm (separate)
Cleavage
Extremely rapid mitotic divisions that immediately follow fermentation.
Blastomeres
numerous smaller cells that divided from an enormous volume of zygote cytoplasm. Found in the cleavage stage. Pg.11
Blastula
A sphere of blastomeres that form by the end of cleavage.
Gastrulation
Blastomeres undergo movement and change their positions relative to one another. This cellular rearrangement forms three germ layers. Gastrula Stage
Gastrula Stage
embryo contains three germ layers. endoderm, ectoderm mesoderm
Fate Map
map of cell movement
Cell Lineage
following individual cells to determine final specification
Transgene
DNA from another species
GFP
Green fluorescent protein jellyfish
Homologous
Same evolutionary origin
analogous
different evolutionary origin, same evolutionary function
