chapter 5 Flashcards
reasons to classify?
- Curious minds search for order in the universe
- classification is convenient
- to express the degree of “ancestral relationship” between different organisms
what is taxonomy?
the science of classification
order of classification lvls?
Kingdom,phylum,Class
,order,family,Genus,
species
(kindly put clothes on for goodness sake)
Monera, Protista, fungi, plantae,Animalia
why are viruses considerd to be living/non-living
They reproduce through a host cell and don’t use the typical way of dividing to replicate
what is bacteriophage?
is a category of viruses that infect and destroy bacterial cells
viruses are composed of what?
inner nucleus acid core surrounded by capaid
Lyric vs Lysogenic
Lystic bacteriophage “bursts out” of the host cell destroying it
Lysogenic= the cycle is continuous in where the viruses Dna is mixed with the hosts Dna and continued though generations
how does the body defend itself against viral attacks?
Non specific= External defense Skin,Mucous internal defense -Fever Internal response •cellular warning system •when cells get message of invasion they protect themselves better Antibodies(protein made to shut down the bad guy white blood cells
how do vaccines work?
a sample of dead/similar part of virus=encourages antibody protection
(gets you ready for war by making antibodies ahead of time)
Prophage
genetic material of a bacteriophage incorporated in the gene of a bacterium
Virulent phage
a bacteriophage that lyses bacteria it infects
Retroviruses
any group of RNA viruses that insert a DNA copy of their genome into the host cell to replicate
