chapter 5 Flashcards
1
Q
enantimers vs. diastereomers
A
enantiomers - SI that are nonsuperimposable mirror images
diastereomers - SI that are not mirror images (ex: cis and trans)
2
Q
achiral vs chiral
A
achiral - plane of sym., no SC, superimposable
chiral - not super imposable, SC, enantiomers, no plane of sym.
3
Q
optically active vs. optically inactive
A
active - contains chiral compound
ex: 50% meso + 50% diastereomer = optically active
inactive -
- achiral compound w/no SC
- meso comound - achiral w/ 2+ SC’s
- racemic mixture - equal amount of two enantiomers
4
Q
R and S to determine sterochemistry
A
enantiomer - ex: R,R –> R,S
diastereomer - ex: R,S –> S,S
5
Q
physical properties: CI enantiomers diastereomers racemic mixture
A
CI - different
enantiomers - identical except for direction of polarized light is rotated
diastereomers - different
racemic mixture - possibly different from either enantiomer
