- Recurring gaps in the recall of everyday events, important personal information, and / or traumatic events that are inconsistent with oridinary forgetting.

- Person experiences memory loss in the absence of any identifiable organic cause
- General knowledge and skills are usually retained
- People forget events or periods of life that were traumatic that generated strong negative emotions such as horror or guilt
- Not atributed to age / cultural or medical expectations
