chapter 5 Flashcards
what is the cell that builds the cartilage matrix?
Chondroblasts
what is the functions of the integument system
protection
prevention of water loss
temperature regulation
metabolic regulation (vitamin D)
immune defense
sensory reception
excretion
what tissue is the epidermis made of
keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
what are the 2 layers of the dermis
papillary, reticular
what is the papillary layer made of
areolar connective tissue
what tissue is the hypodermis made of
adipose connective tissue and some areolar tissue
what glands are missing in thick skin?
sebaceous glands
where is the stratum lucidum found
only in hands and feet
what is happening to the cells in the stratum granulosum
they are in the process of dying
what happens in the process of dying
they are getting flat (getting rid of organelles), synthesizing lots of keratin, plasma membranes are going to fuse
what are the cells in epidermis
keratinocytes, melanocytes, tactile cells, and epidermal dendritic cells
where is keratinocytes located
in all layers
what does keratinocytes do
secretes keratin, the cells can alway divide in stratum basale
where are melanocytes
they are in the stratum basale
what do melanocytes do?
secretes melanin (which creates pigment in skin)
where are tactile cells located
scattered in stratum basale
where are epidermal dendritic cells and what do they do
they are in the stratum spinosum and they kill pathogens in the epidermis
what fibers are in the reticular layer of the dermis
collagen fibers
what do merocrine sweat glands do
secret thin watery sweat for thermoregulation
where are apocrine glands
in axillary and groin
what does apocrine glands do
thicker sweat, used for lubrication
what do sebaceous glands secrete
sebum it used for moisture in hair and skin
what is superficial burn also known as
first degree
what is partial thickness burn also known as
second degree burn
what is full thickness burn also known as
third degree burn
what is the immediate risks of a burn
dehydration, infection, thermoregulation
what are the long term risks of burns
replacing the skin (kids growing into skin)
