A

Singapore strategy:
- sent a fleet of warships to defend Singapore
- Singapore will depend on military airfields in Tengah, Sembawang and Seletar + guns positioned east and south to defend against attacks from the SEA

What are some limitations in the defence of Singapore?(lack of resources)?

A

Context: british fighting in Europe, N.Africa and Asia
- military forced provided were insufficient in both number and quality
e.g. Air Force - mostly outdated buffalo fighters
e.g. not enough troops to protect the military airfields all over malaya

What are some limitations in the defence of Singapore(British troops were ill-prepared)

A

context: forces come from different parts of the empire - hard to understand and work with one another
- poorly trained and ill-equipped
- no tanks and very few anti-tank weapons
- big guns were facing the wrong direction + lack of ammunition for enemies on land

What strategies did Japanese utilise to invade Singapore?

A
  1. Japanese spies disguised as tourists to gather information for the military
    - used the info for their plans
  2. Set up a special research unit to look into techniques for jungle fighting and training of the soldiers for the invasion of malaya
  3. Deployed experienced, battled-hardened soldiers who were well supported with weapons, air crafts,tanks and warships and this was led by a highly regarded commander
    - high moral
