National Interest
The strategic goals and ambitions of a nation-state, including security, economic prosperity, and belief/values
(a) ECONOMIC PROSPERITY
stable employment + decent standard of living
(b) SECURITY AND SAFETY
measures to national security + physical protection include laws that protect citizens within the country (also secure borders that can be defend against intruders)
(c) BELIEFS AND VALUES
affirming and promoting citizen’s values, beliefs, and cultures
Sovereignty
A nation’s right to self government and control over its own jurisdiction that is recognized by other nations
Arctic Sovereignty
- Five countries Canada, United States, Denmark, Norway, and Russia had territorial claims over islands and sea bed territories
- The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is a framework for the claims
- Due to climate change new shipping routes and valuable have increased the strategic importance of the Arctic
- Canada implemented specific policies to protect the sovereignty of the arctic such as military and surveillance enhancements and infrastructure development (construction of arctic training centre in Nunavut)
Policy
plan of action that has been carefully chose to fluid or influence future decisions
Domestic Policy
guides decisions about what to do within the country
Foreign Policy
guides decisions about official relations with other countries (action that a sovereign nation takes in its conduct with other nation-states or international organizations)
Gross Domestic Product
value of all goods and services produced in a country every year
Peacekeepers
armed forces that maintain peace by keeping enemies apart until a crisis can be resolved through negotiation
Peacemaking
allows soldiers to use force for reasons other than self defense
