The intangible and abstract components of a society, including values and norms

Beliefs about ideal goals and behaviours

Rules that outline appropriate behaviour
Folkways Definition
Informal norms that suggest customary ways of behaving
Mores Definition
Norms that carry a strong sense of social importance
Taboo Definition
Prohibition on actions deemed immoral
Laws Definition
Norms that are formally defined and enacted in legislation
Sanction Definition
A penalty for norm violation
Ethnocentrism vs Cultural Relativism
Ethnocentrism: Tendency to view one’s own culture as superior to others. Doesn’t allow diversity appreciation
Cultural Relativism: Appreciating that all cultures have intrinsic worth and avoiding judging others customs before understanding them
