down syndrome
-most common cause of intellectual disability within the US
-associated with the presence of trisomy of chromosome 21
-normal IQ: 80-120; DS IQ ranging from 30-70 with mean of 50
-mortality rate increases after 35 -> life expectancy of 60 years
common features of ds
-presence of epicanthal folds and almond shaped eyes
-flat nasal bridge
-shorter limbs
-poor muscle tone
-single transverse palmar crease
-speech and language deficits
-strengths in areas of semantics and pragmatics
-frequent middle ear infections
-large tongue can interefere with speech and swallowing
risk of developing AD
approx. 70% of people w/ ds may develop AD

-beta-amyloid is located on chromosome 21 and people with DS have 3 of them
