a standard of ethics that guides the police when using discression
Use of discretion
There is no set laws guiding discression, but the more serious the case the less discretion afforded to the officer.
Typifications
Constructs based on a patorl officer’s experience in a neighborhood about the typical people and events that occur
Recipes of action
actions were taken by a patrol officers when they encounter someone outside the typification
Bias-free policing
decisions are not based on appearance or steriotypes
Racial profiling
any action taken based on a stereotype and without reasonable grounds
Issues with racial profiling
Racial profiling can result in the over-policing and pretext policing in certain neighbourhoods based on the demographic of the population
Over-policing
when a disproportionate amount of officers focus on one area
Pretext policing
stops or searches for minor offenses or reasons
Criminal profiling
marking certain people based on intelligence as more likely to commit a crime
Ways of racial profiling
Street checks and carding target more discriminated groups

when a person is randomly stopped on the street for a check
Carding
when a person is randomly checked for driver license or other id
